Zelensky urged citizens remaining in Donbass to urgently evacuate | News from Germany about Ukraine | DW

On the 158th day of the full-scale Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine Russian troops continue to try to capture the settlements of the neighboring country. The armed forces and units of the territorial defense of Ukraine resist aggression. It is impossible to verify the statements of representatives of both sides of the conflict from independent sources. According to the UN, about 14 million Ukrainians have already left their homes. DW is watching developments Sunday, July 31 (Moscow time).

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced the need to evacuate citizens who are still in the territory of Donbass. In his traditional video message, he stressed that “hundreds of thousands of people, tens of thousands of children, many who refuse to leave, but this really needs to be done” remain in the zones of fierce fighting in the Donbass.

“This decision will still have to be made. It doesn’t matter. Trust me. And the sooner this is done, the more people will leave the Donetsk region now, the fewer people the Russian army will have time to kill. Therefore, if you have the opportunity, please speak with those who still remain in the war zones in Donbas. Please convince them that they need to leave, and especially if they are families with children. If you have the opportunity to help the IDPs, do it,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged.

The President recalled that a government decision had been made on mandatory evacuation from the Donetsk region, and the evacuees would receive full assistance and payments. Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk stated that the evacuation should be carried out before the onset of winter, since gas supply was disrupted in the region.
