Zelensky responded to the petition to demolish the monument to Catherine II in Odessa

The President of Ukraine has responded to the electronic petition “To demolish the monument to Catherine II in Odessa” – it was submitted to the Odessa City Council with a request to consider it in accordance with its competence.

“I thank everyone who joined this petition for their active citizenship in protecting national interests, clearing public space of objects and monuments that perpetuate Russian anti-Ukrainian propaganda narratives in Ukraine,” Zelensky said.

He recalled that by the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 1181 of September 8, 2004 “Some issues of construction (creation) monuments and monuments” it is established that monuments and monuments erected to commemorate events and the memory of figures may have state or local significance. The decision on the construction (creation) of monuments and monuments of national importance is taken by the Cabinet of Ministers, and local – by local executive authorities or local governments.

The monument to Catherine II (“To the Founders of Odessa”) was erected in accordance with the decision of the Odessa City Council dated July 4, 2007 “On the comprehensive restoration and improvement of Catherine’s Square in Odessa with the reconstruction of its historical appearance.”

Taking into account the above and taking into account the norms of the Law of Ukraine “On Local Self-Government in Ukraine”, the electronic petition was sent to the Odessa City Council with a request to consider it in accordance with the competence, the head of state summed up.

Electronic petition No. 22/145072-ep “To demolish the monument to Catherine II in Odessa” was published on the website of the Official Internet Representation of the President of Ukraine on June 28, 2022 by citizen S.I. Tsegelnik. She got 26504 votes.
