The video of a group of men navigating the waters of the Medellín River has generated multiple reactions on social networks. While some condemn the act due to the risk that this maneuver represents for health, others assure that that action could have damaged the lighting that was arranged there in the middle of the commemoration of the Christmas dates. The mayor of Medellin, Daniel Quintero, decided to express what he felt about it; however, his opinion was not received positively by some. The president of the capital of the Antioquia department is seen laughing at the facts.

It was through his TikTok account that Quintero reacted to the video in which the protagonists shouted: “God bless you, the good one. Made in Medellin, forever. The correct. Long live the lights! Long live the lights of Medellín, the most chimba city!. The three men seen in the video decided to float on floats and go under the illuminated structure that covers the river. The mayor, upon seeing the video, laughs, which sparked outrage among the population, who condemned his attitude and reminded him that instead of having fun, he should be taking action on the matter.

Among the comments that the official received were those that highlighted that if this had happened in another city, those involved would have had to pay fines and even face the authorities. “Hope they are going to start a business with that to give tours”; “That is why Medellín is the most innovative city in the world and should be the capital of Colombia”; “In another country they are fined, here the mayor laughs”; “Discard the idea of drones, send people in inflatables down the river to deliver packages”; They wrote to him within the most popular messages.

On the other hand, some TikTok users highlighted Quintero’s attitude in a positive way and described him as “cool” for taking the situation with humor. “I, being the mayor, also laugh, it could be a campaign to clean the river”; “Ah, Medellín is a chimba. I love the reaction of the mayor”; “Mayor: that would be a very good tourist option, to recover the river for all these types of activities,” read the comments section.

Alonso Restrepo, one of the youths who got into the river, spoke to the Q’HUBO media outlet, and gave details of what happened. “We start at Industriales and end at La Macarena, along the entire stretch of lighting, from the Industriales station to the last bridge. (…) The impact was impressive, people enjoyed it and so did we”he commented.

It is noteworthy that the lighting of the Medellín river is important because it is the first time it has been carried out after eight years. The decoration was inaugurated with the help of an inaugural concert by Sebastián Yatra and Carolina Gaitán. “We return to the river corridor, from the Guayaquil bridge to the river parks, we made a connection ramp so that people can once again walk through the lights on foot”said Jorge Jaramillo, manager of Christmas lighting EPM (Empresas Públicas de Medellín).

“The river became a total challenge, it was to get there from scratch, again to recognize, because since 2014 we had not taken the 1,800 meters of the river, so once again take all the structural part, laying of wire ropes (…) Carrera 70, the Ayacucho tramway, Las Palmas avenue, plus the main park of each of the 16 communes and the 5 corregimientos”, added, on the subject, Juliana Londoño, EPM lighting design team leader. As revealed by that entity, to make the decorations work properly, the teamwork of 360 people was necessary. Among the professionals there were engineers, technologists, operators and architects.

“We have an estimate of around 10 million LED bulbs, 1,000 meters of neon hose, 750 kilometers of LED hose, around 32,000 figures, 220 tons of iron”Jorge Jaramillo pointed out.

“This is a moment of unity for Medellín, Antioquia and Colombia. Here we are all one and in December, when we all come together again, we remember everything that happened in the year. Those who left us the good things that happened, also those that were not so good, but at Christmas we connect with God and ask him that next year be very beautiful, that he light up “said the local president, on the other hand, about the importance of lighting.
