Vereshchuk calls on the world to join the evacuation of the seriously wounded from Azovstal

Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Irina Vereshchuk called on the world community to join the process of evacuating the seriously wounded from Azovstal, surrounded by Russian invaders, in Mariupol.

As reported by Ukrinform with reference to website of the Ministry of Reintegrationin an interview with the French TV channel BFMTV, Vereshchuk spoke about the critical situation at Azovstal.

“We need the help of leaders of states in mediation in order to agree with Russia on the guarantees that it must provide during the humanitarian corridor. This is the ceasefire, the place where the wounded will be evacuated”, Vereshchuk emphasized.

According to her information, there may be about a thousand more fighters on the territory of the plant, half of whom are seriously wounded. They need immediate medical attention. Violent battles are constantly going on there, the Russians do not abandon their attempts to storm Azovstal, inflict numerous air strikes, there was also an attempt at a ground special operation – the enemy is trying to destroy everyone who survived.

“We need a new special operation that will help evacuate the wounded soldiers from Azovstal. The missions of the Red Cross and the UN are ready to join the process of organizing the evacuation. And I will ask the entire international community to join it,” Vereshchuk stressed.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that this requires the participation of leaders of states who have experience of cooperation with Russia and understand who Putin is.

As reported, Russian aggression caused one of the largest humanitarian disasters in Mariupol. The city has been blocked by the invaders for more than two months. They have bombed residential areas and civilian infrastructure, blocking humanitarian aid.

The evacuation of civilians has already taken place – women, children and the elderly, who were in the shelters of the Azovstal plant in Mariupol. However, on May 9, the head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Pavel Kirilenko, said on television that more than 100 civilians remained in shelters at the metallurgical plant.
