US to give Ukraine 18 more M777 howitzers, tractors and counter-battery radars – Pentagon

About it informed US Defense Department spokesman John Kirby at a briefing.

“This package will include 18 155mm howitzers, as well as 18 tactical transporters to carry these howitzers,” Kirby said, pointing out that this number of M777 howitzers corresponds to the armament of an artillery battery.

In addition, according to him, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive an additional three AN / TPQ-36 counter-battery radars.

“This is a counter-artillery system, which we have already talked about earlier, and which has already been supplied to Ukraine,” said a Pentagon spokesman.

He emphasized that the shipment of this and other equipment would take place “very soon” and informed that the American side was in “constant communication” with Ukrainian colleagues in order to know all the urgent needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Kirby also noted that the Ukrainian Defense Forces are making good use of the M777 howitzers already donated by the United States, most of which are already on the front lines.

He stressed that artillery proved to be a critical element of the Ukrainians. According to him, when it became clear that the main hostilities would take place in the Donbass, there was also an understanding that the result of the battle would largely depend on artillery and the ability to fire at a long distance.

“We know that most, the vast majority of the howitzers that we sent are on the front line in different places in Ukraine, the Ukrainians use them and do it quite effectively,” Kirby said.

According to the White House, on May 19, the President of the United States Joe Biden announces spin-off another tranche of defense assistance for Ukraine. He also welcomed a bill passed by the US Congress to allocate an additional $40 billion to respond to Russian aggression against Ukraine.

At 4 am on February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” in the occupied Donbas. Russia launched missile strikes on the territory of Ukraine and launched a direct full-scale invasion in four directions. The armed forces of Ukraine are rebuffing the enemy, the blitzkrieg plan – to capture Kyiv in two or three days – failed, the Russian army retreated from the capital. The Russian military is committing thousands of war crimes and crimes against humanity throughout Ukraine.
