The decision of the European Council was announced by its President Charles Michel on Twitter.
“Agreed. The European Council has just decided to grant Ukraine and Moldova candidate status for EU membership. Historical moment. Today is a decisive step on your way to the EU. Congratulations to Vladimir Zelensky and Maia Sandu and the peoples of Ukraine and Moldova. Our future is together,” wrote Michel.

In turn, President Volodymyr Zelensky also welcomed the decision of the European Council.
“I sincerely welcome the decision of EU leaders to grant Ukraine candidate status. This is a unique and historic moment in relations between Ukraine and the EU. I am grateful to Charles Michel, Ursula von der Leyen and the leaders of the EU states for their support. The future of Ukraine is in the EU”, — wrote Zelensky on Twitter.

- 1 March European Parliament by overwhelming majority approved the resolutionrecommending that EU member states work towards granting Ukraine candidate status for EU membership.
- June 17 The European Commission recommended The European Council to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate member of the European Union. A list of Ukraine’s next steps on the way to the EU was also published.
- 23 June European Parliament adopted a resolution calling to grant Ukraine and Moldova the status of a candidate member of the European Union without delay. Also, MEPs support the European perspective for Georgia.
