Ukraine expels Iranian ambassador

The government in Kyiv said it had withdrawn the accreditation of Iran’s ambassador to Ukraine and would “significantly reduce” the number of Iranian diplomats at the embassy in response to Tehran’s “unfriendly act” to sell combat drones to Russia.

“The supply of weapons to Moscow directly contradicts the position of neutrality, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, publicly declared by the top leadership of Iran. This is an unfriendly act that deals a serious blow to Ukrainian-Iranian relations,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The decision to withdraw the accreditation and expel an as yet unspecified number of diplomats was handed over to Iran’s charge d’affaires on Friday evening.

Recall that earlier the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine stated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed six “Russian kamikaze drones provided by Iran.”

  • According to photos and videos circulating on social networks, we are talking about kamikaze drones marked Geran-2 (Geranium), which resemble the Iranian Shahed-136.
  • In a video from Odessa, the Ukrainian military retrieves another type of drone from the Black Sea. The device is similar to the Mohajer-6 model.

The US first accused Iran of selling combat drones to Russia in July, which Tehran denied. At the end of August, the Kremlin called US media reports about the transfer of drones “information stuffing”, but said that relations with Iran are “developing dynamically”.

It is very likely that the decision to expel Iranian diplomats to Bankova was “prompted” by Washington, who was offended by his speech at the UN Ebrahima Raisi (more about it here).
