On Thursday and Friday, an international project was presented at Dailes teatris in Riga, bringing together the theaters of Latvia, Great Britain and Ukraine. The comedy “Something Wrong With This Performance” was prepared especially for Ukrainian refugees.
An Ukrinform correspondent reports this.
There’s Something Wrong With This Show is the premiere hit of the 2021-2022 season at the Dailes Theatre. As its director Juris Žagars explained, in the spring, when Ukrainian military refugees began to arrive in Latvia, they were invited to the performance. Although the performance was in Latvian, the Ukrainians laughed a lot in this situation comedy, full of ghegs and non-verbal jokes. The audience thanked for the invitation: as one of the women said, thanks to this comedy, her teenage son smiled for the first time since the start of a full-scale war.
After that, Dailes decided to present this performance to some Ukrainian theater. It was the Kyiv Theater of Drama and Comedy on the left bank of the Dnieper, which opened its European tour in Riga in early June with the play Bad Roads (she won the Shevchenko Prize in 2022).
London’s Mischief Theatre, which owns the rights to this performance, supported the idea of the Riga colleagues and licensed it to Ukrainians for free.
The producer of the Ukrainian version of the performance, which has already been staged in more than 30 countries around the world, was Laura Vilcane, head of the troupe of the Theater on the Left Bank, currently living in Riga. According to her, the Ukrainian-language performance was prepared only after three weeks. 16 representatives of the Kyiv theater (including 10 actors) who came from the Ukrainian capital took part in this work.
The performance in Riga was joyfully received by the Ukrainian audience. Upon its completion, the troupe stretched out a large Ukrainian flag on the stage.
The director, artistic director of the Kyiv Drama and Comedy Theater Stas Zhirkov said a few words to the audience. He stressed that the aggression unleashed by Russia is a war against the Ukrainian people, identity, Ukrainian statehood, as such. Therefore, it is very important that the Ukrainian word sounds more often.
The stage curtain closed to the cries of the troupe and the hall “Glory to Ukraine!” – “Glory to the heroes!”.
The international tripartite theater project was made possible thanks to the support of fans: Tet technology company, Pigožnis family, SIGNET bank, INDEXO pension fund, Rimi Latvia retail network.
According to Vilcane, the Ukrainian version of “Something Wrong With This Performance” will be shown in Riga on September 1-2. Tours are also planned. True, this performance has rather complex scenery, but, according to the producer, these problems can be solved.
The play The Play That Goes Wrong based on the play by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields has been successfully shown at the Mischief Theater in London’s West Endy for seven years now. In 2015, it won the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy of the Year.
As Ukrinform reported, as of July 27, about 35,000 Ukrainian refugees were registered in Latvia, the vast majority being women and children.
