The first president of post-Soviet Bashkiria, Murtaza Rakhimov, ruled the republic for 20 years, from 1990 to 2010. On December 11, after a long illness, he passed away.

Despite the fact that the politician has officially been out of power for 12 years, the people have not forgotten him. From the very morning of January 13, a queue began to line up at the Bashkortostan concert hall in Ufa. Both officials and ordinary residents of the region came.

The last time such a stir was caused only by the funeral of Zhirinovsky. And farewell to Vladimir Volfovich was the last official funeral ceremony that Vladimir Putin personally attended (he paid tribute to Gorbachev’s memory before the solemn ceremonies at the Central Clinical Hospital).

Up to this day. In the morning, the head of the country went by plane to Ufa to say goodbye to Rakhimov.

The Russian leader put a bouquet of dark red roses to the coffin of the politician, where the awards were. Vladimir Vladimirovich silently stood nearby, bowed slightly and left.

– He made a significant contribution to the development of the republic in its new capacity, as a subject of the Russian Federation. He pursued a very balanced national policy, took a practical, real part in the life of all of Russia and, without any exaggeration, played a very important stabilizing role at a turning point in Russian history, Putin said.

Born Murtaza Rakhimov from the village of Tavakanovo, Kugarchinsky district. His first job was as an operator at the Ufa Oil Refinery in 1956. After he became the director of the plant.

The head of the republic traveled a lot around the region. The people respectfully nicknamed him “Babay” – like a grandfather in Bashkir.

In the early 90s, Rakhimov, contrary to Yeltsin’s decree, forbade the dissolution of collective farms. This has preserved a large agricultural cluster of the republic. Until now, Bashkiria has the largest proportion of rural residents in the country.

Under the rule of Rakhimov, more than a thousand schools were built in the republic, new sports and recreation centers and hospitals appeared in each regional center. In Ufa, the Akbuzat Hippodrome, the modern Congress Hall, the Ufa Arena, the Kuvatov Hospital, the Gostiny Dvor, the Nur Tatar Theater, the Bolshoi Drama Theatre, the new building of the Ufa Airport and much more were erected.

– He saved our region, turned Bashkortostan into a leading region, a very authoritative subject of the Russian Federation with a strong economy. It is really incredible that every family in Bashkiria has its own story connected with Murtaza Gubaidullovich, there is a good memory of him, – said the head of Bashkiria Radiy Khabirov at the funeral.

It should be noted that the fighting spirit in the republic does not fall. At the last state awards ceremony in the Kremlin, all the stars of the Heroes of Russia went to fighters from Bashkiria.
