On August 2-7, Chukotka will host the Bering Strait International Festival as part of the main events plan of the Russian Chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 2021-2023. The chairmanship events are operated by the Roscongress Foundation. The festival program includes the business program “Arctic Forum of Travelers”, sports competitions “Bering Games” and a tour expedition around the region. The festival-branded events will also be dedicated to the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, which is celebrated on August 9th.

The Bering Strait International Festival will be opened by the business program of the Arctic Travel Forum. Chukotka will host professional tour operators and hospitality experts from all over the Russian Arctic. Discussion participants will discuss key industry trends, best practices in organizing Arctic travel, and successful cases in promoting the regions of the Far North. Director of the Arctic Portal Halldor Johansson (Iceland) will talk about the preferences of foreign tourists. The forum also focuses on issues of sustainable development of tourism in the Arctic, aspects of creating new infrastructure, topics related to branding territories and popularizing tours. As part of one of the discussions in Anadyr, popular travel bloggers who have made more than a dozen interesting expeditions in the Arctic, Bogdan Bulychev, Alexei Zhirukhin, Albert Sokolov and Stanislav Koryakin, will meet and exchange views.

The sports program of the festival includes competitions among representatives of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic “Beringia Games”, in which representatives of all the Arctic regions of Russia will take part. About 50 people will determine the strongest in seven northern disciplines, including triple jumps, stick pull and high kick with one leg. The competitions are aimed at involving people living in the Arctic zone of Russia in regular physical education and sports, popularizing the traditional sports disciplines of indigenous peoples, as well as strengthening ties between the Russian Arctic regions.

During the days of the festival in the Chukotsky district of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, in the village of Lorino, the Jubilee Sea Hunters Regatta “Beringia-2022” will also be held – team races on traditional Chukotka canoes among men’s and women’s teams, as well as festive events dedicated to the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

A highlight of the Bering Strait festival will be a tour expedition around Chukotka, its goal is to show the brightest points of tourist attraction in Chukotka. The festival will end at the extreme eastern mainland point of Eurasia Cape Dezhnev, where the expedition members will plant the flags of the festival.

With the help of the festival, we intend to tell everyone who is interested in unique tours in the Russian Arctic, and the magnificent nature of Chukotka will not leave anyone indifferent!” – said the governor of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug Roman Kopin.

The organizers of the festival are the Government of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and Rostourism.

As part of the chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 2021-2023. Russia pays considerable attention to the development of sustainable tourism in the Arctic in the interests of the progressive socio-economic development of the Arctic regions, support for small and medium-sized businesses in high latitudes, as well as the preservation and enhancement of the cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples of the North.
