Strengthening the role of the Ukrainian media regulator will strengthen the exchange of information in the EU

The Ukrainian media regulator must promote a true culture of independence.

This was stated by the Chairman of the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting Olga Gerasimyuk at a briefing at the Ukraine Media Center – Ukrinform.

“The Ukrainian media regulator must promote a true culture of independence. … An independent regulator is independent media. This is very important. Strengthening the role of the Ukrainian media regulator is an increase in the possibility of exchanging information between European colleagues on information terrorism, on the aggressor state and on prompt response to actions occupiers,” Gerasimyuk said.

According to her, the work on the bill on media will be the basis for the rapid and holistic implementation of the EU conditions and a roadmap for implementing the necessary rapid changes.

As reported, the adoption of media legislation, taking into account the requirements of Directive No. 1808/2018/EU, streamlines Ukrainian legislation in accordance with the recommendations of Council of Europe experts and brings it closer to the legal framework of the European Union, is one of Ukraine’s obligations under the association agreement with the EU.

On June 23, the heads of state and government of the European Union decided to grant Ukraine the status of an EU candidate country. This status is granted without conditions, however, a number of recommendations of the European Commission must be implemented.

Chairman of the National Council for Television and Radio Broadcasting Olga Gerasimyuk believes that Ukraine has enough political will to reform media legislation in terms of its adaptation to European standards.
