The White House has officially announced an additional $450 million in defense support to Ukraine to ensure the transfer of more weapons and equipment to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including HIMARS systems, ammunition and other equipment.
John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications at the US National Security Council, said this on Thursday during a briefing at the White House, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“The United States announced $450 million in additional defense support to Ukraine as part of our commitment to help Ukraine defend its democracy against the backdrop of unprovoked Russian aggression,” the White House spokesman said.
Kirby specified that the new package provides Ukraine with “weapons and equipment, including new HIMARS systems, tens of thousands of additional projectiles for artillery systems already provided, and patrol boats.”
Aid is allocated under the Presidential Drawdowns mechanism, and this is the 13th time that the head of the White House has used this format to send defense aid to Ukraine during the current war. Thus, the United States supplied the Armed Forces of Ukraine with weapons and equipment for a total of $6.1 billion after the start of large-scale Russian aggression.
As Ukrinform reported, last week, US President Joe Biden, in a telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, assured him that the United States would continue to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
