Colombian singer Shakira became a defendant in a tax evasion case – authorities Spain claim that the artist owes the country about 14.5 million euros between 2012 and 2014.

It is known that the prosecutor’s office, which claims that during these years Shakira lived in Spain, requires a fine and imprisonment for 8 years, the singer’s lawyers prove that during this period she lived mainly outside the country.

The case is quite controversial, because according to Spanish laws, a person who has lived in the country for more than six months becomes its tax resident. And it was in 2012 that Shakira bought a house in Barcelona and lived there with her then boyfriend. Gerard Piqué, Barcelona football player.

In Barcelona, the couple also had both sons – one in January 2013, and the second in January 2015. This summer, Shakira and Piqué announced their breakup.

Shakira herself thinks herself “absolutely innocent”, since she registered as a tax resident in Spain in 2015, and fully compensated everything that she owed, and even with interest.

Lawyers are confident in the strength of the singer’s position, therefore they refused a deal with the prosecutor’s office. Details of the deal have not yet been disclosed, and a court hearing has not yet been scheduled.

By the way, the now ex-boyfriend of Shakira, Gerard Pique, once went through the court in the case of tax evasion – in 2019 he was sentenced to a fine of 2.1 million euros.
