Several more Russian banks to be cut off from SWIFT payment system in new package of sanctions – Borrell

This was stated by the High Representative of the EU Josep Borrell.

“There will be more banks in the Russian banking sector that will turn off SWIFT,” Borrell said.

According to Bloombergthe new sanctions list will include the largest bank in Russia, Sberbank, against which the US and the UK have already introduced restrictive measures.

Borrell also expressed hope that the sixth package of sanctions against Russia will be adopted at the next meeting of the ambassadors of the EU member states. Such meetings are scheduled for May 10 and 16.

As reported, on February 27, the leaders of the European Commission, France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Canada and the United States announced powerful new set of economic restrictions against Russia, which includes the disconnection of Russian banks from the SWIFT payment system, sanctions against the Central Bank of the Russian Federation and a ban on the sale of “golden passports” to wealthy Russians.

The EU and US sanctions imposed against Russia because of the war in Ukraine have almost completely blocked the participation of Western technologies and companies in the development of the military-industrial complex of Russia, said a marine expert, editor-in-chief of BlackSeaNews Andrey Klimenko on air programs “A Question of National Security” with Valentina Samar (project Center for Investigative Journalism).
