SBU Detains Deputy Rector of Donetsk University – He Demanded Money from Foreigners for Admission

The SBU detained one of the deputies of the rector of the Donetsk National Medical University on a bribe from foreign students.

“I detained one of the deputies of the rector of the Donetsk National Medical University, who, using his official position, demanded an unlawful benefit in the amount of UAH 100,000 for enrolling foreign students in this higher education. The SBU documented the fact that the attacker received the first part of the illegal benefit. Upon receiving the second “tranche” in the amount of UAH 37,000, he was detained,” the message says.

According to the SBU, the leadership of the educational institution systematically set up a criminal scheme of extortion and unlawful benefits from foreign students.

“So, the rates were set at $200 for transfer to an educational institution and $800 for passing the academic difference. In addition, students also had to officially pay funds for educational services to the account of the state university,” the SBU notes.

At the same time, the secret service added, official payments were also appropriated by the university management and were not credited to the state budget, which led to multimillion debts university before the state.

Law enforcement officers initiated criminal proceedings under Part 3 of Art. 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the detainee was informed of suspicion.
