Rosselkhoznadzor revealed an unprecedented amount of fake saury in Russia

In July, representatives of the Rosselkhoznadzor department for the Novosibirsk region discovered that the Sok-Fish company produced more than 1,147 tons of canned fish, indicating inaccurate data on the raw materials used. According to preliminary estimates, the total illegal income from this activity amounted to more than 320 million rubles. This is the largest batch of counterfeit canned fish found in Russia. So, from August 19, 2021 to July 21, 2022, in the documents for the production of canned saury and mackerel, cheaper fish – sardine and herring are indicated as raw materials, canned cod liver – herring and pink salmon, and in the production of canned pink salmon – herring.

“These facts testify to the violation of the fundamental principle of traceability by SOK-FISH LLC,according to the message of Rosselkhoznadzor. “In addition, it was found that in May 2022, without specifying information about raw materials in the FSIS “VetIS” – “Mercury” component, 492 kg of canned saury was produced.” In this case, none of the specialists can even approximately trace either the quality or the elementary safety of canned food – inside the already produced and sold cans, there may well be expired raw materials or fish affected by parasites and pathogens of dangerous diseases.

According to the Rosselkhoznadzor, counterfeit canned fish were regularly sent to retail chains in the Kemerovo, Novosibirsk, Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk regions at least throughout the past year. To prevent the violation of the mandatory requirements of the Sok-Fish company, a warning was issued: a warning was issued to the representative of the enterprise through the FSIS VetIS.Passport.

Recall that in December 2021, Roskachestvo conducted a rolling study of canned saury, which showed that no saury DNA was found at all in the products of 11 brands out of 19 studied. Moreover, if some companies subsequently change the recipe, others insist on their right to drive counterfeit. So, “KP” saidthat representatives of the Russian Fish World company addressed a letter to Roskachestvo, in which they stated that the consumer himself is to blame, since he pays attention only to the names of cans and does not read the details of the composition of canned food, written in small print. And there he will discover that the jar is not saury at all, but a cheap sardine.

However, Roskachestvo believes that such an “interpretation” of product labeling is a gross violation of the law. “We explain that, according to the mandatory requirements of TR EAEU 040/2016, the indication of the type of fish is mandatory. The placement of the name “Saury natural seaside with oil” on the front side of the label misleads the consumer,” the organization’s website says.

Besides, KP correspondents visited the companywhere honestly produce canned fish. And they told how to distinguish saury from a fake: both in appearance and in price.
