Every day of Russian military aggression against Ukraine brings new atrocities, the manifestation of which was the murder of Ukrainian prisoners of war in occupied Olenivka and the terrible videos of Russian soldiers humiliating a Ukrainian prisoner of war.
According to Ukrinform, this is stated in a statement by EU High Representative Josep Borrell, circulated on Friday at site European External Action Service.
“Russian criminal and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine and against its people every day brings more and more terrible atrocities… The European Union condemns in the most powerful terms the atrocities committed by Russian troops and their supporters. These inhumane, barbaric acts are grave violations of the Geneva Convention and its Additional Protocol and are considered war crimes,” stressed the High Representative of the EU.
According to the document, on July 29 in Olenivka, in eastern Ukraine, Russia reportedly killed dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war, including defenders of the Mariupol Azovstal steel plant who surrendered to Russia, who were registered with the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) in May under legal protection. Russia, according to international humanitarian law. Pro-Kremlin social media now circulates video images of Russian soldiers commit a terrible atrocity over a Ukrainian prisoner of war.
“The perpetrators of war crimes and other serious violations, as well as responsible government officials and military representatives, will be held accountable. The European Union actively supports all measures that will ensure such accountability for violations of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law in the course of Russian aggression in Ukraine,” Borrell stressed.
As already reported, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Russian military deliberately fired on the colony in Olenivka, where Ukrainian prisoners of war were kept, which led to numerous casualties. At the same time, Kremlin propagandists tried to blame Ukraine for this shelling, which was another manifestation of an undisguised and cynical lie, resolutely refuted by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, the deliberate murder of Ukrainian prisoners in the temporarily occupied Olenivka, Donetsk region, was committed by mercenaries from the Russian private military company Wagner.
