In early November, Vladimir Putin met with historians and representatives of religions. Guests of such events traditionally share their ideas and proposals with the President. If something sensible is said, the head of the country then gives specific instructions to officials to do it.

And so the Russian leader signed a new package of instructions on history and religion.

The first instruction to the government is to “popularize” traditional values with the help of real historical heroes and folklore characters.

“Including the use of images of these heroes in fine art, printed materials, souvenirs and consumer goods,” the document says.

For example, images of a goldfish, a grandfather, and a greedy grandmother can illustrate several traditional values at once: the priority of the spiritual over the material (no need to be greedy), creative work (if you want a new trough, do it, and don’t wait for handouts), a strong family (grandfather from grandmother didn’t leave after the whole story).

The Government, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Knowledge Society were instructed to “popularize modern scientific knowledge.” First of all, history.

The assignment is written rather vaguely. This is probably because the speech of the Znanie lecturer Elena Kryazheva-Kartseva (who spoke about popularization) was also quite abstract.

“We are well aware that the main goal is to convey to people the information that there are goals in life through the study of the feat of our people, our saints, commanders, rulers, cultural and scientific figures,” the lecturer said at the meeting.

The government and authorities of the new regions were instructed to restore or repair museums in the annexed territories. Moreover, it is necessary not only to return the expositions to their former form, but to turn them into modern exhibitions with interactive samples according to the best world traditions.

The first results must be submitted by September 1, 2023.

“To provide scientific research on the history of the origin, development and consequences of the colonial policy of European states on the African continent.”

And this is the proposal of the historian Alexander Chubaryan. He advocates that the school spend more time on the history of Asia and Africa. And first of all, how did these regions suffer from our current geopolitical enemies in the past.

The Ministry of Education and Science, together with the Russian Historical Society, was also instructed to think about a course for universities on the “history of religion in Russia.”

Initially, this was the initiative of MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov. At the meeting, he stated:

– It’s not about giving the guys the facts again, but conveying the meanings to them. The meanings of certain events are not even events, but historical phenomena that determined the civilizational essence of our country and its development, the diplomat said.
