Putin appointed a new chief “political officer” of the Russian army

Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the appointment of Colonel-General Viktor Goremykin as Deputy Minister of Defense – Head of the Main Military-Political Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces.

According to Ukrinform, the decree was published on portal Russian legal information.

Since November 2021, this post has been occupied by Colonel General Gennady Zhidko. At the end of May, the press reported that it was he who was given command of the Russian troops in the “battle for Donbass.” This was not officially confirmed or denied, however, Zhidko was included in the list of US sanctions.

the main military-political directorate, in accordance with the law of the aggressor state, conducts military-patriotic work in the armed forces of the Russian Federation. It was created in 2018. The first head of the department, now State Duma deputy Andrei Kartapolov, stated that “the main goal of the military-political bodies being created is to form a statesman warrior – a reliable and devoted defender of the fatherland, a bearer of the traditional spiritual and moral values ​​​​of Russian society – statehood, spirituality and patriotism.”

Recall that the Soviet army also had a main military-political department, it was disbanded in 1991, shortly before the collapse of the USSR.
