Poll: Young people in Germany drink less and smoke more marijuana | News from Germany about Germany | DW

According to a study by the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA), in Germany in 2021, young people consumed less alcoholthan before. The share of smokers among 12-25-year-olds has been low for more than a year. At the same time, the popularity of marijuana is growing. Such data were published by the department on Thursday, June 23.

According to the BZgA, in 2021, 8.7 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 consumed alcohol regularly, meaning at least once a week. Compared to 2004, when their share was 21.2 percent, this indicator not only dropped significantly, but also reached the lowest level since the beginning of such monitoring. Among young people aged 18 to 25, the proportion of regular drinkers has also fallen to 32 percent. In 2004, they were 43.6 percent.

Drunkenness when it comes to drinking at least four glasses alcohol in a row for women and at least five glasses in a row for men – is also on the decline: 11 percent of respondents aged 12-17 admitted that they had drunk alcohol in such quantities over the past 30 days. In the 18 to 25 age group, 32.7 percent said they had been drunk at least once in the past 30 days.

The share of smokers is at a historically low level

According to the BZgA, youth smoking rates in 2021 remained “consistently at historically low levels”: among 12-17-year-olds smokers was 6.1 percent, and among 18-25-year-olds – 29.8 percent. In 2001, these figures were 27.5 and 44.5 percent, respectively.

On the other hand, the number of young people who use cannabis has increased in Germany. The proportion of 18-25 year olds who have ever “smoked weed” has risen from 34.8 percent in 2012 to 50.8 percent in 2021. Among 12-17-year-olds, this indicator remained almost unchanged and amounted to 9.3 percent (in 2011 – 6.7 percent).

For extensive preventive measures

Burkhard Blienert, Commissioner for Narcotic Drugs of the federal government, pointed out the relevance of the issue of prevention in this regard, emphasizing that “when it comes to cannabis, it should be as wide as possible” – and recalled that exactly effective preventive measures taken in the country ensured the reduction of alcohol and tobacco consumption.
