Artillery attacks carried out by Russian troops from the territory of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, underscore Russia’s irresponsible attitude towards nuclear safety.
This was stated by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, speaking at the UN at a conference on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“Now Russia is using the nuclear power plant as a military base for shelling the Ukrainians, realizing that they cannot and will not shoot back, as this is fraught with an accidental defeat of a nuclear reactor or a repository of highly radioactive waste. This takes the concept of a “human shield” to a completely different, terrible level,” the head of American diplomacy said.
He also stressed that the Kremlin resorted to “dangerous rattling nuclear weapons”. Moreover, Blinken noted, the president of the Russian Federation is personally threatening countries that support Ukraine, with consequences “which have never been seen in their entire history.”
Blinken stated that in today’s civilized world there is no place for nuclear deterrence based on coercion, intimidation or blackmail.
“We must come together to fight back,” the US Secretary of State stressed.
As reported by UkrinformMinister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko said that the capture by the Russians of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and the deployment of military units there is a manifestation of nuclear terrorism, which is a problem not only for Ukraine, but for the whole world.
