More than 250 migrants rescued at sea off Libya in a week
Over the past week, 254 illegal migrants have been intercepted at sea off the coast of Libya and returned to shore
This was stated by the International Organization for Migration, Ukrinform reports with reference to Xinhua.
“During May 1-7, 254 migrants were intercepted at sea and returned to Libya,” the IOM said in a statement.
It is noted that this year in the waters of Libya rescued 4715 illegal migrants, 114 people died and 436 went missing.
“Libya has been plagued by chaos since the overthrow of the regime of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, which is why illegal migrants choose this North African country as a starting point for crossing the Mediterranean on their way to the shores of Europe,” Xinhua explains.
Last year, 32,425 migrants were reportedly rescued at sea, 662 died and 891 went missing.
