Moldova will buy gas from Romania, bypassing Russia

Moldova will start buying natural gas from Romania in order to reduce its energy dependence on Russia.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu announced this during her visit to Romania, an Ukrinform correspondent reports. Xinhua.

“The situation requires us to act as urgently as possible and look for alternative ways to maintain the stability of our country and smoothly move through the winter,” Sandu said.

According to her, the supply of natural gas from the territory of Romania should begin as soon as possible. “Moldova needs energy security solutions now! We want to buy gas from Romania, and it is important that this happens as soon as possible,” the president said.

She added that Moldova is also trying to reduce energy consumption and is trying to replace natural gas with oil, firewood or coal in winter.

Recall that at the end of last year, the construction of a gas pipeline between Romania and Moldova, a country completely dependent on Russian energy resources, was completed. This pipe connects gas networks of the two countries and gives Moldova access to the European energy market. However, the gas pipeline has not been used at full capacity since its launch.
