First, let’s figure out what kind of support suspends Microsoft. Many will be surprised to learn that the official support for Windows 7 by the American corporation ended not on January 10, 2023, but three years ago, in January 2020.
Microsoft committed to providing 10 years of support for Windows 7 by releasing the operating system on October 22, 2009, a post on the company’s website read. – This 10-year period is over and Microsoft has ended support for Windows 7 in order to focus on supporting newer technologies. Microsoft strongly recommends upgrading to Windows 11 so you don’t end up in a situation where service and support isn’t available.
But most Windows 7 users simply didn’t notice the lack of support. Over the next three years, Microsoft continued to release so-called “patches” (patches) that ensure the security and data protection of its customers running on Window 7. But not all, but only those who paid for extended support for their systems. As a rule, these are corporate users. And this support ended on January 10 of this year.
– I think that the termination of support from Microsoft will not affect the work of most computers of ordinary users, – Mobile Research analyst told KP.RU Konstantin Ivanov. – I must clarify that Windows 8 is not a very successful experimental system at all, it is installed on a very small number of computers. Windows 7 is approximately 10% of devices running on Microsoft operating systems. Basically, these are organizations that have not yet untied their systems from Windows 7. Peripheral devices, say, machine tools or ATMs, can still work on this operating system. But they most likely have their own security systems, and are not critically dependent on Microsoft patches.
The problem of maintaining data security on any computers, including those running on outdated versions of Windows, according to the expert, is solved by installing a third-party antivirus program.
– The same Kaspersky is still updating its protection even for Windows XP, – says Konstantin Ivanov. – What can we say about the later Windows 7. So for 10 years it will still be possible to use this operating system without worrying about anything.
However, over time, more and more applications will not work well on older operating systems, so experts recommend updating the operating system to more recent versions. And if Windows 11 makes rather high demands on the filling of a computer, then Windows 10 also works on fairly old devices. At one time, the developers tried to adapt it to the minimum system requirements.
True, legal downloading of Windows operating systems is now difficult due to the geo-blocking of users from Russia against the backdrop of sanctions. However, you can bypass the restrictions by using VPN services. There is also an opportunity to purchase software products that come to Russia under parallel import schemes.
