Mass killings of Ukrainians by Russian troops are genocide

This is stated in the report “An independent legal analysis of the violation by the Russian Federation of the Convention on Genocide in Ukraine and the duty to prevent”, a summary of which was published by Ukrinform.

As international genocide researchers emphasize, the Russian military rounded up civilians in Ukraine for mass executions in temporarily occupied territories, using typical methods of killing: bound hands, torture, execution by shooting in the head at close range.

According to international legal research, the well-documented massacre of Ukrainians in Bucha, Kyiv region, may point to consistent tactics used by Russian forces in inaccessible, captured regions.

The number of mass graves in Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine is rapidly increasing, as investigators and satellite imagery have documented, though the full extent of the killings will not be known until areas controlled by Russian forces are accessed, the report said.

As Ukrinform reported, the report “An Independent Legal Analysis of the Russian Federation’s Violation of the Convention on Genocide in Ukraine and the Duty to Prevent” is the first to examine one of the most controversial and significant issues of the Russian invasion of Ukraine: whether this war has the characteristics of genocide.

The study is a project of the New lines Institute and the Raoul Wallenberg Center, which brought together three groups of experts. These include a team of legal scholars and genocide experts, a team of researchers who have studied open source information, and a team of linguists who have taken advantage of the wide range of primary sources already available – intercepted messages and testimonies. The New Lines Institute and the Raoul Wallenberg Center studied the Rohingya and Uyghur genocides, in particular, they prepared the first report confirming the fact of the genocide in Xinjiang in the understanding of the 1948 Genocide Convention.
