French President Emmanuel Macron called the “historic” decision to grant Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidates for membership in the European Union.
He stated this at a press conference in Brussels after the adoption of this decision by the European Council, Ukrinform reports.
Tonight we open a new stage for Ukraine, for Moldova, for Europe. This is historical,” Macron said.
Noting that a week ago in Kyiv, he, along with the leaders of Germany, Italy and Romania, “undertook this commitment to work towards granting the status of an EU candidate for Ukraine”, Macron said that within a week, thanks to the European Commission, “we have advanced by leaps and bounds.”
Macron stressed that this is a big “political gesture” of support from a “strong and united Europe.”
He also stressed that this is “a very strong signal in relation to Russia.”
“We owe all this to the Ukrainian people, who are fighting for our values, their sovereignty, their territorial integrity. We are also indebted to Moldova, given its political situation, the destabilization it is experiencing and the generosity it has been able to demonstrate,” Macron said.
At the same time, regarding the further steps of the candidate countries on the path to membership, he stressed: “The process that is starting will be demanding.”
As reported, the EU summit was held in Brussels today, the participants of which at the highest level considered applications for EU membership of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.
The Heads of State and Government of the European Union also decided to grant Ukraine the status of an EU candidate country.
