Jason David Frank, ‘Power Rangers’ star, dies

NEW YORK (AP) — Jason David Frank, who played Green Power Ranger Tommy Oliver on the 1990s children’s series “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” has died. He was 49 years old.

His representative Justine Hunt reported the death in a statement on Sunday. She did not specify the cause or date of death, but she asked for “privacy for her family and friends during this horrendous time as we come to terms with the loss of such a wonderful human being.”

Walter Emmanuel Jones, the original Black Power Ranger who co-starred in “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” with Frank, wrote on Instagram that he couldn’t believe the news.

“My heart is heavy to have lost another member of our special family,” Jones wrote. Thuy Trang, who played the original Yellow Power Ranger, died in a road accident in 2001 at age 27.

“Mighty Morphine Power Rangers,” about five teenagers tasked with saving Earth from evil, debuted on Fox in 1993 and became a pop culture phenomenon. In the opening episodes of the first season, Tommy Oliver —the role played by Frank—was considered a villain brainwashed by the evil Rita Repulsa, but soon after he joined the group as the Green Power Ranger and became one of the most popular characters on the show.

Although his role was not intended to be permanent, Frank was later summoned as the White Power Ranger and the team’s leader. In the spinoff series, Tommy Oliver returned as other rangers, including Zeo Red Ranger, Turbo Red Ranger, and Dino Black Ranger. He also played it in the movies “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie” and “Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie,” and he made a cameo appearance in the 2017 “Power Rangers” series.

A martial arts practitioner, Frank participated in various mixed martial arts bouts in 2009 and 2010.

Celebrity website TMZ previously reported that Frank’s second wife, Tammie Frank, filed for divorce in August. Frank is survived by four children: one from his marriage to Tammie Frank and three from his first marriage to Shawna Frank.
