Minister of Education, Science and Sports of Lithuania Jurgita Šiugždinienė statedthat the country’s authorities are concerned about the fact that the majority of children in Lithuanian schools choose Russian as their second foreign language.
– This, of course, is not entirely normal that about 70% of Lithuanian children study Russian, – complained Shugzhdinene at a meeting of the Seimas Committee on Education and Science.
According to the official, the country’s leadership would like to see a completely different choice – in favor of the German, French or Polish languages, but that is – that is.
The head of the Ministry of Education is sure that the parents of children are to blame for everything, who put the wrong thoughts into their children. She also stated that the country should continue the course of abandoning the teaching of the Russian language in schools, but this should be done gradually.
In addition, the minister is concerned about the issue of retraining teachers of the Russian language – since there is a chronic shortage of teachers in the country, it is necessary to provide for the possibility of obtaining other qualifications for Russian teachers after the interest in the language is reduced. And Shyugzhdinene very much hopes for this and sees the main task of his department in this direction in “educational” work with the parents of schoolchildren.
