how to use it, the dermatologist explained

How to properly use antiperspirants dermatologist, deputy general director of the Beauty Institute on the Arbat in Moscow Elena Shunigina.

Antiperspirant is not medical, but cosmetic. Therefore, the question of harm disappears by itself – all cosmetic products that have been certified are harmless. If, of course, they are used correctly. You can put foot cream on your face and then claim that the cream harmed you.

The same is true for antiperspirants. Apply it all over the body – and you will disrupt the heat exchange between the body and the environment. Therefore, the question is more appropriate: how to use this tool correctly so as not to harm yourself?

There are two ways to get rid of the strong smell of sweat – with the help of deodorants and antiperspirants. The mechanism of action of these cosmetics is different. The deodorant prevents the growth of bacteria in a humid environment, absorbs natural body odors and imposes its own smell, says Elena Shunigina.

The antiperspirant works more dramatically. It blocks the activity of the sweat glands for a certain time and can only be used on limited areas of the skin. The antiperspirant is so convenient and effective that women are tempted to expand the area of its application and use it almost around the clock.

Why you can’t use antiperspirant all the time

– Because sweating is a natural function of the body and it cannot be completely suppressed. The skin is a barrier organ. Through it, substances are released that the body must remove. It is not for nothing that the evaporation area is so large – almost two square meters. And you can’t apply antiperspirant to most of this surface, says Shunigina.

Another thing is to block the activity of the apocrine sweat glands for a short time. That is, just those that emit the most pungent odor. They are located in the armpits and in the pubic region. And they begin to function with the onset of puberty. This, by the way, explains the fact that children do not have a strong smell of sweat.

The intensity of the sweat glands is individual. For some women, it is so great that they simply need an antiperspirant. For them, this is the only way to get rid of unpleasant odors and stains on clothes. Especially if the work is related to public speaking.

In what places of the body is it not recommended to use antiperspirant?

“The use of antiperspirants should be limited to applying them to certain areas in a certain period of time and in certain situations,” says Shunigina. Never apply antiperspirant to

  • back,
  • breast,
  • feet
  • and forehead.

These areas have their own hygiene products.

For example, there are no apocrine glands under the breast. But there the woman is threatened with diaper rash. Therefore, it is better to use our domestic powder. For example, the old reliable remedy halmonin.

Foot odor is caused by bacteria that thrive in humid environments.. Therefore, it is also better to use powder for feet and periodically make baths with infusion of oak bark. In severe cases, Teimurov’s formaldehyde-based paste can be used.

Never use antiperspirants during sports and during hours of intense physical activity. The body with the help of increased sweating is freed from toxins. And don’t bother him.

Antiperspirants can be safely used by both aged women and young girls.

Another question – are they needed? Apocrine sweat glands only work during puberty. With the onset of menopause, they cease to function. And at this age it is just better to use deodorant. It is much more effective in dealing with a specific age-related smell.
