NEW YORK (AP) — Guillermo del Toro has been honored at the 2022 Film Benefit Gala at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA).

Oscar Isaac, Jessica Chastain, Ariana DeBose, Richard Jenkins, Finn Wolfhard, Gregory Mann and MoMA’s Principal Film Curator, Rajendra Roy, gathered Thursday night to pay tribute to the Mexican filmmaker. The 15th film gala, organized by MoMA and Chanel, also featured video messages from Cate Blanchett, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton.

“I think the only way you can be loved is if you’re loved for who you are,” Del Toro said emotionally upon receiving the award. “When you don’t pretend and you’re not afraid to wear your imperfections like a badge of honor. That’s why I love monsters and that’s why cinema has saved my life so many times, because these conventions and these images exist in a realm beyond words.”

“I believe in the power of art to heal us,” he added.

Chastain was in charge of giving an emotional speech for the director. The actress began with an amusing anecdote about del Toro’s on-set demands during the filming of “Crimson Peak” that one day lasted until the wee hours of the morning and didn’t stop until Chastain managed to genuinely terrify the director.

“We are lucky to live at a time when his imagination is running wild, because the worlds he has built in his career are so indelible, so unique, so certain, that they are immortal,” Chastain said.

The guests at the gala were able to see the exhibition “Guillermo Del Toro: Crafting Pinocchio” exclusively, which takes visitors into the creative process of the director’s most recent film, “Pinocchio” (“Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro”). The exhibition will be inaugurated this weekend at the museum. Del Toro’s film is currently in theaters in select theaters and opens Friday on Netflix.

Grammy and Academy Award winning musician HER performed overnight.

This year has been astonishing for del Toro. In addition to achieving the long-awaited release of “Pinocchio,” a film that he has said he had wanted to make for decades, he received an honorary doctorate from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Del Toro was born in Guadalajara, in the western state of Jalisco, on October 9, 1964. He was awarded Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture for “The Shape of Water.” His film “Pan’s Labyrinth” was awarded Academy Awards for best art direction, cinematography and makeup.

Founded in 1935, MoMA’s Film Department owns more than 30,000 films and 1.5 million frames. The charity gala makes it possible to maintain and increase its outstanding collection, as well as boost its virtual and face-to-face programming.

Past MoMA Film Benefit Gala honorees include Penélope Cruz, George Clooney, Laura Dern, Martin Scorsese, Julianne Moore, Tom Hanks, Alfonso Cuarón, Quentin Tarantino, Pedro Almodóvar, Kathryn Bigelow, Tim Burton, Baz Luhrmann, Blanchett and Swinton.
