The Government of Canada has announced a program to buy firearms from the public, which has been banned in recent years.
Canadian Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino announced this in Ottawa, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.
“Offensive firearms like the AR-15 have no place in Canada. It was created for the purpose of killing as many people as possible. That is why the Canadian government has banned these weapons in the country. The price list unveiled today is another step towards ridding the Canadian community of these dangerous weapons while providing fair compensation to law-abiding gun owners,” Mendicino said.
Redemption prices range from about $4,700 for the SG550 to $900 for the VZ.58. The infamous AR assault rifle, which is used in many mass shootings in the US, will be bought by the government from its rightful owners for about $1,000.
The Department of Public Safety of Canada noted that the pricing process was based on “how much Canadians could pay for assault-type firearms until May 2020.”
Until the end of August, public consultations on the proposed prices will continue, but this year the final estimate should be approved.
The buyback program is mandatory, which means that owners of weapons who refuse to sell them to the government will have their weapons seized after the buyout period ends.
In recent years, there has been a reported increase in the number of bloody incidents involving firearms in Canada. Therefore, the government went to a significant increase in gun control and removed from sale the so-called “offensive weapons”, including the very popular AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.
