Germany, Hungary and Italy will carry out air patrols of the Baltic countries

After the rotation, Germany, Hungary and Italy joined the mission of patrolling the airspace of the Baltic States.

“Over the coming months, four Hungarian JAS-39 combat aircraft and about eighty personnel will lead the mission, which will operate from the air base of Siayulia in Lithuania. Four German Eurofighter aircraft will fly from the Amari base in Estonia. In Malbork, Poland, Italian Eurofighters will join them, ”the report says.

The new contingent will replace the Belgian, French and Spanish air units that have been patrolling the region since April.

“Since the accession of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to NATO in 2004, the allies have alternately patrolled the skies over these countries, since they do not have their own fighters,” the press service explained.

AT NATO added that “after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, air patrols in the eastern part of the Alliance were reinforced with additional aircraft.”
