Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Annalena Burbock (Annalena Baerbock) on Tuesday, May 10, the first member of the German government since the beginning of the war unleashed by Russia, paid a visit to Ukraine. She first visited the Kyiv suburb of Bucha, where Russian troops allegedly massacred civilians.
Burbock said she was appalled by reports of the incident. She called for an investigation into the incident and bringing the perpetrators to justice. “This is our duty to the victims. And these victims, as it is so clearly felt here, could be us,” the head of the German Foreign Ministry said.
Massacre in Bucha
According to the Ukrainian authorities, in Bucha, during the month Russian occupationhundreds of civilians were killed. After the departure of the Russian troops, numerous corpses of people were found in this settlement. Similar finds were made in other regions of Ukraine. The Russian leadership denies any involvement in these crimes.
Annalena Burbock during her stay in Bucha spoke about “war crimes and crimes against humanity”. She called Bucha the place where “the most terrible crimes” were committed, adding that that is why it is so important for her to be there today. The German Foreign Minister was accompanied by the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Irina Venediktovawho leads the investigation events in Bucha.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz instructed Burbock to pay a visit to Ukraine to demonstrate Germany’s solidarity with the country. Scholz himself is also planning to visit Ukraine, after Volodymyr Zelensky invited him and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to do so.
