Five strange diagnoses that you will be given only in Russia

Turning to the doctor with a complaint of feeling unwell, you can sometimes hear a diagnosis with a familiar name. However, you will not find it in any official directory.

Therapist, endoscopist Lidia Golubenko told what diagnoses you can make only in Russia, and why they cannot be trusted.

Vegetative-vascular dystonia

This diagnosis is made for any ailments – frequent headaches and dizziness, weakness, digestive problems, nausea, sweating, shortness of breath, palpitations, chest pains – if there are at least a few of these symptoms.

At a doctor’s appointment, you may be told that the disease is caused by a malfunction of the autonomic nervous system, whose tasks include regulating the activity of internal organs, endocrine and external secretion glands, as well as blood and lymphatic vessels.

In reality, the specialist says, these signs can be symptoms of very different specific ailments or the result of stress and an unhealthy lifestyle. You can be treated for a non-existent disease for a long time, while it is enough to start eating right, increase physical activity and improve sleep – and all the “symptoms” will be removed as if by hand.

Pre-stroke or pre-infarction condition

Strokes and heart attacks are associated with clogging of blood vessels in the brain or heart, which leads to impaired blood supply. However, it is impossible to identify the state preceding this in advance.

And no doctor can accurately determine that you are about to have a heart attack or stroke.

It can only be noted that the vessels are in poor condition, and advise the patient to take preventive measures. There is nothing new in these recommendations: giving up bad habits, moderate exercise, proper nutrition, perhaps taking some medication prescribed by a doctor.

Senile dementia

This diagnosis is often made in elderly patients with cognitive impairment. But, according to Lydia Golubenko, problems with memory and thinking can occur with a variety of diseases that affect brain neurons. It can be Alzheimer’s disease, and epilepsy, and ordinary sclerosis, and brain damage due to a head injury.

Dementia should not be considered the norm for the elderly; at the slightest sign of cognitive problems, one should turn to specialists. The treatment prescribed at an early stage can at least partially stop the situation, the expert says.

Intestinal dysbacteriosis

The composition of the intestinal microflora is indeed capable of changing. But it cannot be called a disease. Sometimes, for some reason, beneficial bacteria die, and other microorganisms, among which there may be pathogens, take their place. In this case, we may feel discomfort in the intestines.

This situation can arise as a result of taking antibiotics, poisoning or stress. However, after some time, everything usually returns to normal without additional drugs. It is enough to include in your diet, for example, sour-milk and pickled products, so that the population of beneficial microflora recovers faster.

Inflection of the gallbladder

Such a diagnosis can be made with an ultrasound of the abdominal organs. Although, in fact, a change in the shape of the gallbladder with kinks in the area of its neck or body is a variant of the norm, and not a pathology, explains Lidia Golubenko. And, as a rule, patients do not experience any inconvenience from this. Nevertheless, the doctor seeks to prescribe a special therapy or advises to remove this “problem” organ altogether.

So, behind the formulation of a “non-existent” diagnosis, there may be either a desire to cash in on expensive paid treatment, or the most common incompetence. Therefore, in doubtful cases, you should go to another specialist.
