EU flags were used by Ukrainians during revolutions and will be in de-occupied cities – Zelensky

President Volodymyr Zelensky assured that Ukraine is capable of becoming a full member of the European Union, and believes that the EU flag will fly in all Ukrainian cities de-occupied from Russian invaders.

He mentioned this during appeals to the participants of the EU summit after granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership, Ukrinform reports.

“On the fifth day of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, we applied to join the European Union. We responded very quickly and efficiently to the questionnaire that we received from the European Commission. And today this is the desired result. Today I want to once again personally confirm that Ukraine is capable of becoming a full member of the EU,” the head of state said.

He noted that although Ukraine remained formally outside the European Union, probably, in our state there were the most flags of the united Europe.

“They (flags – ed.) were in the hands of our people during the revolutions, our people have had them in the trenches since 2014. I believe that the EU flag will be in every Ukrainian city that has yet to be liberated from occupation by the Russian Federation. The Ukrainian and European flags will also be together when we rebuild our state after this war,” Zelensky stressed.

The President is convinced that the decision on candidacy is not only for Ukraine, but also “the biggest step that could be taken to strengthen Europe in our time and in such difficult conditions, when Russia’s ability is testing our ability to preserve freedom and unity.”

As reported, the heads of state and government of the European Union on Thursday decided to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate country for joining the EU.
