do not wet and do not touch!

Who at least once in his life “jumped out” a boil, he will never forget these sensations. For those who have not experienced this, it will not be harmful to get acquainted with the mechanism of the onset and course of the disease in order to wholeheartedly realize the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and daily hygiene procedures.

“Pravda.Ru” gives the floor to a dermatologist Margarita Bolotina.

“In the medical dictionary, a furuncle is defined as” a purulent-necrotic inflammation of the hair follicle and its surrounding tissues. In the future, inflammation passes to the sebaceous gland and the surrounding connective tissue. It is called Staphylococcus aureus or white,” says Bolotina.

The infection is introduced into the body through damaged skin, it is:

  • cracks,
  • abrasions,
  • cuts.

Therefore, compliance with sanitary and hygienic standards is of particular importance in the prevention of furunculosis.

Where “sit” boils

Furuncles usually do not develop on hairless skin (palms, soles), but most often occur on areas of skin that are subject to pollution and friction:

  • on the forearm
  • the back of the hands,
  • back of the neck,
  • lower back,
  • gluteal region of the thigh.

Why does furunculosis appear

A furuncle can be single, but sometimes many foci of inflammation appear in different areas of the skin simultaneously or sequentially one after another, which makes it possible to speak of furunculosis. A significant role in the occurrence of boils is played by:

  • weakening of the immune system
  • debilitating chronic diseases,
  • avitaminosis,
  • diabetes.

What happens when a boil appears?

A small void is formed around the hair with a small inflammatory infiltrate in the form of a knot. During this period you feel:

  • mild itching,
  • tingling.

By the end of the second day, an inflammatory tubercle (infiltrate) is formed, the skin around it turns red and becomes painful when touched.

At the very top of the infiltrate, there is a small accumulation of pus with a black dot (necrosis) in the center. On the 3-7th day, the tubercle breaks through, and pus is released in the form of a rod with the remnants of the hair. The wound is cleared and healed. A small scar remains at the site of inflammation.

One boil usually does not cause changes in the general condition of the patient, but when localized on the face, nose and neck, the general condition can be complicated:

  • high temperature,
  • pain
  • chills
  • decrease in vision.

Treatment of a boil at the very beginning of the process consists in:

  • smearing it with tincture of iodine,
  • ichthyol ointment under the plaster.

Dry heat (sollux, UHF) is shown, which gives an analgesic and bactericidal effect.

If there are many boils or the disease often recurs, non-specific simulating procedures are prescribed in the form of autohemotherapy (intramuscular injections of one’s own blood, 5 ml every other day).

The risk of complications with furunculosis

Attempts to self-extrude a boil always carry the risks of various complications. In addition, pressing on the site of inflammation brings strong pain.

When treating a boil, it is strictly prohibited:

  • squeeze out the contents of the boil to prevent the spread of infection;
  • massage the area around the boil;
  • make wet dressings in the form of compresses, as this can lead to the appearance of multiple boils on other parts of the body.

Among the risks are:

Infection in most cases, boils form in the deep layers of the skin, and with strong pressure, the pus does not always come to the surface, it enters the bloodstream, and the infection spreads throughout the body;
Brain damage when the abscess is localized on the face or scalp, the infection can reach the brain, which will cause the development of meningitis or meningoencephalitis with all the ensuing consequences (up to death);
Development of furunculosis instead of one abscess, many will appear, the process can become chronic and require long-term expensive treatment.
