Death of detainees in Yelenovskaya colony was due to an internal explosion, not shelling – human rights activists

About it human rights activists report from the Media Initiative for Human Rights (MIHR), citing its sources from the occupied part of the Donetsk region.

As noted, on the evening of July 28, an explosion was heard in the Yelenovskaya colony, in which Russian invaders are holding Ukrainian prisoners of war, including soldiers of the Azov regiment, as well as civilian hostages who did not pass the so-called filtration. Ambulances arrived at the colony at night and in the morning.

Propaganda Russian media, citing, among other things, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine allegedly targeted the barracks where the captured Ukrainian military were kept, “who had begun to cooperate with the investigation.” Russian Telegram channels showed a video with the consequences of the explosion in the colony.

“There was no shelling of the territory of the colony on July 28, but it was an explosion, since there was no sound of arrival characteristic of the shelling. The explosion was heard in the evening, when some of the prisoners of war were at the barracks on the street. After him, everyone was herded into the premises, but many heard screams from outside, ”the sources of human rights activists say.

A man who spent several months in a colony in Yelenovka in the spring of 2022 told MIHR that there are at least six large two-story barracks with separate rooms on his territory – and these are permanent structures. They are located nearby. Five men’s, on the contrary – one women’s. Near the barracks there is an area where they can move around. Each of these barracks can contain about 200 people. But, according to the witness, none of the barracks he described are similar to the one shown in the video by the Russians.

“I can only say that the fence in one of the frames on the video is similar to the one in Yelenovka,” he specified.

MIHR also received a rough plan of the territory of the Yelenovskaya colony. The barrack where the explosion occurred could have been located in a technical area, which the prisoners and guards of the colony call “promka”.

Another MIHR source claims that the barrack in question, where the explosion occurred, was not used to hold prisoners, and is located at a distance of about 300 meters from the main group of barracks, and it was there that about two hundred “Azov” captured by the Russians were brought the day before. in Mariupol. Where they were kept since mid-May, when the so-called evacuation from the territory of the Azovstal plant took place, is unknown.
