China announces military exercises near Taiwan

Following a visit to Taiwan by Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, China announced the holding of military exercises, which will partially take place in Taiwan’s territorial waters.

It is noted that China announced plans to create six zones around Taiwan, where combat exercises will be held from August 4 to 7. Ships and planes have been warned not to cross these zones, some of which cross the island’s territorial waters, for “security reasons,” according to a statement released by the Chinese state agency Xinhua.

One of the planned exercise areas is less than 19 kilometers from Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s southern port city, according to a map released.

In a separate statement, the People’s Liberation Army of China said it is launching a series of joint naval and air exercises in the waters and airspace north, southwest and southeast of Taiwan that will include “long-range live fire.”

Taiwan’s National Defense Ministry has criticized China’s plan to conduct a series of live-fire military exercises in six maritime areas near Taiwan, calling it an attempt to blockade the country. Focus Taiwan.
