On the official website of the II International Forum for the Conservation of the Tiger published business program event, which will take place on the opening day of the Eastern Economic Forum, September 5.
“Thanks to the implementation of the measures taken at the first Tiger Conservation Forum, over the period since 2010, the tiger population has not only stabilized, but also has a steady upward trend. In this regard, the issues of not only the conservation of the tiger, but also the peaceful, conflict-free coexistence of humans and this animal, which is reflected in the program of the Forum, are now coming to the fore,” said Konstantin Chuichenko, Minister of Justice of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Forum.
The business program includes a plenary session, four events covering the most pressing and topical issues in the protection of the tiger, as well as a separate session dedicated to the conservation of the Far Eastern leopard.
Among the issues to be discussed at the sessions are the availability and replenishment of the knowledge base about tigers, the study of the processes occurring in their population, environmental education and public outreach in support of wildlife conservation activities, the exchange of best practices for tiger conservation, the allocation of financial resources and others. In addition, the theme of involving indigenous peoples and local communities in the protection of the tiger and its habitats will be touched upon.
“When developing the program, we tried to take into account all aspects that affect the state and development of the tiger population. Forum participants will have the opportunity to exchange best practices for the conservation of the striped predator, share their experiences, talk about the problems they have encountered and how to solve them. Tigers, like other animals, do not know borders, therefore their protection is not the task of a single state, but of the entire world community, and the Forum in Vladivostok acts as a platform for an open and constructive dialogue of interested parties,” said Anton Kobyakov, Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation.
Particular attention in the business program of the event will be given to reports by representatives of the countries of the tiger range on the results of the implementation of the Global Tiger Restoration Program, adopted 12 years ago at the first Tiger Forum, which they will present at the plenary session.
“At the Forum, we will take stock of our twelve years of work, including the results of the Global Predator Recovery Program, and set ourselves new goals for tiger conservation. The Amur tiger is a symbol of the Far East, the pride and heritage of the country. There are legends about the owner of the taiga, he was considered the spirit of ancestors, the progenitor of peoples and was inviolable. But in the twentieth century, the situation changed dramatically, and already in the forties, the number of Amur tigers in the wild in Russia did not exceed 50 individuals. It took decades of comprehensive conservation work for the Amur tiger to become the master of the taiga again. We have good results, but this is not a reason to stop there. The Amur tiger is in the Red Book of Russia, which means it is still vulnerable,” commented Russian Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology Alexander Kozlov.
