The president USA Joe Biden called on Congress to abolish fuel taxes for three months. “We can lower fuel prices and ease the financial situation of families somewhat,” he said on Wednesday, June 22. At the same time, Biden called on state administrations to abolish their own taxes on fuel. The White House also said that energy concerns will call for expanding the capacity of oil refineries.
At the same time, influential Republican Senator John Thune expressed the opinion that Biden’s initiative has no chance of getting through Congress. A number of congressmen, both Republicans and Democrats, expressed skepticism about the president’s proposal. They fear that the savings will go not to citizens, but to the energy concerns themselves.
Currently, fuel in the US costs about $5 per gallon (€1.25 per litre). The federal government taxes each gallon at 18.4 cents for gasoline and 24.4 cents for diesel fuel. Some state taxes on fuel are higher than federal taxes.
