Alexei Navalny was assigned to a detachment with those convicted of murder | News from Germany about Russia | DW

Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, sent to strict regime colony IK-6 in the village of Melehovo Vladimir region, placed in the same detachment with those convicted of murder. Navalny spoke about this on the social network Instagram on Thursday, June 23. According to him, his detachment is kept in a section of the colony, completely isolated from the rest of the zone, and is “a prison within a prison with a completely insane and intolerable regime.”

convicts with whom Navalny is in the same detachment, he described as “good, calm, benevolent prisoners.” Nine years of imprisonment, to which the oppositionist was sentenced, according to him, is the smallest term of imprisonment here: “The average here is 13-15 years. There are 19 and 20.”

According to Alexei Navalny, it is easier to be with people who have long terms of imprisonment, “there is less fuss, petty conflicts.” At the same time, he notes that such prisoners are very dependent on the administration: “If the term is “fifteen”, then parole, which will throw off 5 years, is a life priority.”

Navalny case

Alexei Navalny was sent to places of detention after in early February the Simonovsky District Court of Moscow changed his suspended sentence in the Yves Rocher case to a real sentence of 3.5 years in prison. The formal reason was that the oppositionist came to report to the penitentiary commission not on the days appointed for this, but from August 2020, after he was poisoned by “Novichok” and taken to Germany for treatment, he stopped appearing at the inspector’s at all.

Navalny and his lawyers assured the court that the oppositionist was physically unable to visit the inspector, as he was first inpatient and then outpatient treatment in a German clinic and notified the penitentiary inspectorate about this.

On March 22, the court sentenced Alexei Navalny to 9 years of strict regime in the case of “fraud and insulting the court.” The visiting session of the Lefortovo court took place right in the penal colony No. 2 in Pokrov, where Navalny was already serving his sentence in the Yves Rocher case. Prosecutor Nadezhda Tikhonova requested 13 years in a strict regime colony for him.
