After acquiring Ukrainian citizenship, it is necessary to confirm knowledge of the Constitution and history of Ukraine

People who have acquired citizenship of Ukraine within two years must confirm their knowledge of the Constitution of Ukraine and the history of Ukraine.

Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers Oleg Nemchinov said this on the air of the telethon, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“The draft law on the conditions for acquiring citizenship of Ukraine provides that people who acquire citizenship of Ukraine, including those who have significant merits before the Ukrainian state, who defend Ukraine in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who have state awards, their children, etc. after receiving Ukrainian citizenship for for two years must confirm the knowledge of the Constitution of Ukraine and the history of Ukraine. Failure to confirm this knowledge can lead to deprivation of citizenship, “Nemchinov explained.

Answering a question about a sufficient level of knowledge of the Ukrainian language when acquiring citizenship, Nemchinov suggested that a network of testing centers had already been created, and it was they who would conduct testing for knowledge of the language.

“Now we have a well-established procedure for confirming this (knowledge of the language – ed.) for civil servants, as well as for persons holding public positions. I think this will be the easiest, because there is a whole network of centers that conduct such testing. And, most likely, they will be entrusted with the duty to conduct this testing,” he said.

He added that when acquiring citizenship, one must have a sufficient level of knowledge of the language.

Nemchinov noted that the knowledge of the Ukrainian language was already a condition, but this was not enshrined in any legal acts. Accordingly, it became necessary to expand this concept. Therefore, by order President On July 27, the government of Ukraine voted at its meeting a draft of such a legislative act, and on July 28, the Day of Ukrainian Statehood, which is symbolic, this draft law was registered in the Verkhovna Rada.

At present, this is a bill, Nemchinov noted, and after its adoption, the government has a big roadmap to develop a number of by-laws. In particular, who will take the exam and in what form will be decided by by-laws.

As Ukrinform reported referring to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, the Cabinet of Ministers has submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law on the conditions for acquiring Ukrainian citizenship.
