New York Gov. Kathy Hokul said the recent snowfall was one of the most devastating in the state’s history. Such a storm is comparable to the blizzard of 1977. There is zero visibility on the roads, the passage on them was difficult due to a snowstorm. In New York alone, at least 17 people died due to sudden snowfall and low temperatures. The dead were found on the streets, frozen in snowdrifts, others in their cars, police said.

Rescue teams that went to the calls did not have time to reach the addressees, getting stuck in the snow. It is known that the doctors of 11 ambulances were forced to wait for the rescue squads – ambulances simply could not pass.

Soldiers of the National Guard were connected to the rescue of New Yorkers in need of help. According to the governor of the state, the National Guard took part in more than 500 rescue operations, including childbirth.

In addition to the difficult situation on the roads, the situation inside residential buildings leaves much to be desired. Some residents were without electricity for about 56 hours because of the frost. As Cathy Hokul explained, this was due to the fact that the electrical systems could not withstand the heavy load.

According to PowerOutage, more than 98,000 customers were left without electricity and heat on Christmas Eve. Since the beginning of the storm, the number of outages exceeded one million.

The blizzard has complicated the work of the transport system. More than five thousand flights were canceled on Friday, December 23, the 24th – almost 3.5 thousand flights could not take off, and on Christmas day their number amounted to almost three thousand.

The National Meteorological Service predicts better weather in the coming days. Warmer weather is expected and less rainfall. The cyclone will shift towards Canada, but a new front is moving towards the Midwest.
