A natural phenomenon appeared during the early morning of January 12 on a beach in sea of silver and attracted dozens of tourists. As on other occasions, the coast was invaded by algae and “transparent eggs” that aroused everyone’s curiosity. The specialists explained that they are eggs of a species of snail and clarified that they are not dangerous.
The landscape of the Mar del Plata beach was atypical on Thursday because it was full of unusual species. Beyond the classic algae, this time transparent eggs appeared that are called “egg capsules” and that were strange for tourists.
Due to the summer season, a large number of people were in the area, so it aroused the curiosity of tourists who came to see what it was all about. However, others remained concerned because they did not know its origin.
specialists of National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (Inidep) explained that the massive appearance of algae and egg capsules is called “arribazones”, that is, that their arrival on the coast is part of everything that the (southeast) marine currents drag from certain meteorological phenomena.
Although the presence of algae is usually less frequent, the transparent eggs captured all the attention. In this regard, it was stated that these are capsules that can develop up to 30 embryos of volutes or snails. After the development period has elapsed, they break the protection and enter the marine environment.
For this reason, it was clarified that the phenomenon does not represent any danger to the population and it was suggested that if the sea does not drag the species back into the water, intense odors can be generated due to the decomposition process.

In the case of the ovicápsulas that appeared on the coast of Mar del Plata, the researcher of the Conicet, Federico Island reported to telam that these are the eggs of a species of snail known as black volutes or Brazilian volutes, more precisely “pachycymbiola Brasiliana”.
In addition, Isla explained that these snails are common on the Buenos Aires and Uruguayan coasts in the subtidal strip and in depths of up to 20 meters. Regarding the reason for its appearance on the beach, he indicated that it was due to the presence of coastal winds and extensive waves, such as those registered during the storms of the last few hours.
In March 2019, a similar event occurred on the beaches of Mar del Plata, but it involved a different type of algae. While at the end of last year the phenomenon arose off the coast of pinamar and spas near the southern zone, so that the appearance of the species is not strange to the locals.
From the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development, Dr. Laura Schejter explained that egg capsules usually appear every summer in large numbers along with other organisms such as algae or hydrozoans. In addition, she reaffirmed that its appearance occurs after particular climatic events, such as changes in bottom currents, strong winds, tides, or a combination of them.
In addition, he indicated that the reproduction of the species occurs in spring-summer, so that the “eggs” are only found “on the beach in arribazones that occur precisely during the time when the beaches are most active.”
