The challenge is to mobilize their own. The PP is looking for a resounding victory in Castilla y León, a historical granary of conservative votes, and for that it has to be able to motivate its own and make them go to vote in elections that are not held on the best date. February 13 is the middle of winter in a very cold community, and people in rural areas often go outside in search of better weather. In addition, for the first time Castilla y León is holding elections alone, without the boost that going to the polls gives at the same time as other communities. The PP fears, therefore, that the participation will not be enough for an incontestable triumph of Alfonso Fernández Mañueco. The party launches its campaign this weekend in León, at the meeting of the regional congress, and the general secretary of the PP has opened the forum trying to put tension before the appointment with the polls. “These are not just another regional election”, Teodoro García Egea has drawn attention. “The PP”, he warned, “is playing to consolidate the change in trend”.
The PP tries to install the framework that there is a change of cycle in favor of the right that is going to take Pablo Casado to La Moncloa, and that it is up to Castilla y León to consolidate it. After the victory of Isabel Díaz Ayuso in the elections last May in Madrid, the popular ones catapulted to the first position in many polls, but that advantage over the PSOE has begun to shrink at the start of the year, as a result of the internal conflict between Genoa and the Madrid president. Casado therefore needs a landslide victory in Castilla y León to revive the brand and strengthen his own leadership. In León, the PP is going to stage an image of internal unity, with the participation of Ayuso and the rest of the popular barons around Mañueco and Casado. But the conflict with the Madrid leader continues, and the secretary general has insisted on calling to avoid divisions. “Power is in unity, and the more united we are, the stronger we will be”, exhorted García Egea.
The number two of the PP has also charged against Pedro Sánchez, who this Saturday clothes the socialist candidate for the Andalusian Government, Juan Espadas, in an act in Granada. García Egea maintains that the PSOE does not treat the Prime Minister as an electoral asset, and that is why his photo did not appear on the poster for this Saturday’s event. “There is an operation to hide Sánchez in the territories, because they have realized that they cannot see him in the territories, what remains,” he assured. The popular ones try to confront Sánchez as a strategy to mobilize in the elections, just as Ayuso did in Madrid. The appointment with the polls on February 13 decides “between laying out the red carpet for Sánchez or for freedom and growth”, the secretary general has defended.
The PP gathers in León this weekend all the heavyweights of the party. The popular presidents debate this afternoon at a round table on regional policy, in which Ayuso will be, but no turbulence is expected. All have the clear slogan of rowing in favor of a resounding victory for Alfonso Fernández Mañueco.
