In the middle of the Christmas festivities, some 38 drivers they tested positive for breathalyzer test arranged in the Buenos aires city. This was reported by the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works according to the data collected in the 4,204 controls. Now, as a sanction, they will not be able to drive for at least two months.
Each year it is expected that they will be less, however, despite the warnings, the number is maintained. This was specified from the Transportation area when confirming that the percentage of positives from last year was maintained, it stood at 0.90%.
In addition, as specified in a statement Manuela López Menéndez, Secretary of Transportation and Public Works of CABA, this time the number of controls doubled. “This year we doubled the number of checkpoints during the holidays at different rotating points in the City to take care of the neighbors. There are 38 people who tested positive for breathalyzer and will not be able to drive again for a minimum of two months.
From the area they highlight the importance of understanding and transmitting that alcohol and driving are not compatible. In CABA, the maximum tolerated limit of alcohol in blood is 0.5 gr/l for private vehicles, 0.2 gr/l for motorcyclists and 0.0 gr/l for beginners and professional drivers.
Of the total of 38 drivers, the data of about 10 indicated that they had a dosage greater than 1 g/l, which confers a disqualification from 4 months to 2 years; and 28 with a dosage of 0.5 g/l and 0.99 g/l, which is equivalent to a disqualification between 2 and 4 months.
The latter were far from the highest dosage, which was 2.35 g/l of alcohol in the blood, while of the 23 drug controls there were about 4 that tested positive.
In this sense, from the area they express that one in every five fatalities registered in CABA are related to alcohol consumption, they specified. In 2022, a total of 331,986 controls were carried out, which meant a growth of 12% compared to the previous year.
Throughout the year, some 5,155 positives were registered, which represents 1.5% of the total number of controls, that is, 15 breathalyzer positives per day.
In addition, since the implementation of the new law, some 4,774 licenses have been disabled. The rule came into force in February of this year and establishes new penalties that were approved within the framework of the Comprehensive Road Coexistence Project and people who test positive in a breathalyzer test are disqualified. All drivers who test positive are disqualified for a minimum of two months and their situation varies depending on the dosage thrown.
From February to November, a total of 112 workshops were offered and 3,095 people who were disqualified for positive breathalyzer were trained.
The objective of the road safety workshop is for the participants to reflect on the importance of promoting respectful and responsible conduct in traffic to prevent risk situations and avoid victims.
Meanwhile, from 2016 to November 2022, breathalyzer controls increased 177% (from 119,772 to 331,986) while the number of positives decreased from 3.3% to 1.5%.
The City of Buenos Aires announced that for the New Year it will also double the number of controls throughout the territory. There will be 20 stalls located at strategic points. The measure, which is replicated every year, is intended to reduce road incidents during the festivities.
The controls consist of three very simple steps: first, the documentation is verified (driver’s license, green card, insurance), then the test is carried out with alometer-type equipment (to determine if there is presence of alcohol) and finally, Those who test positive will be tested with a breathalyzer to determine dosage.
As explained by the Buenos Aires secretariat, to optimize the control points in different locations, the funnel methodology is used: the vehicular flow is channeled taking several lanes of the avenue to be able to verify a greater number of drivers and so that all the residents who pass by the place do it at a low speed, see what the control is about, and awareness is generated in other drivers.
