The convening of a technical group on the evolution of viruses due to the discovery in southern Africa of a new strain of SARS-CoV-2 is not an “alarm”, but one of the systemic actions for such situations. About this expert of the World Health Organization (WHO) Maria van Kerkhove said on November 25 during a Q&A session on Twitter.

She noted that WHO specialists are working closely with colleagues from South Africa to study the strain of coronavirus B.1.1.529 detected in the country. On this occasion, a meeting is scheduled on November 26.

The meeting participants, van Kerkhove explained, will decide whether to classify the strain as a variant of concern (VOC) or interest (VOI). We are not talking about an “alarm signal”, since for such cases there is “a system” of actions.
