Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women of reproductive age

The endometriosis is a disease that affects only women. This non-hereditary pathology occurs when the tissue that normally grows inside the uterus does so outside it, and can appear in the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, the intestines or the bladder. It is a disease chronic benign and progressive markedly inflammatory character.

According to the doctor Lorena Fernández-Villarenaga Vázquez, service member of gynecology of the Quirónsalud Huelva Hospital, “Currently the origin of endometriosis is unknown, but there are more and more studies and research that help early diagnosis and treatment of the disease.”

The symptoms of endometriosis are various and present in very different intensity, among them are:

  • Dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain). Which can be difficult to control with regular analgesia.
  • Dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse).
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Reproductive problems Sterility or infertility are the main reason for consultation that allows to diagnose this disease.

Especially menstrual pain, is one of the most normalized symptoms at a social level, which is why on many occasions the specialist is not consulted, which makes it difficult to diagnose the disease.

In the words of the doctor Daza Apple Tree Ribbon, a gynecologist at the Hospital QuirónsaludHuelva, ‘pain is subjective and we assume that it must be present during menstruation, but it is not, and therefore we always recommend a consultation if it occurs’. These consultations are the starting point to study the possible diagnosis in depth and in cases such as endometriosis ‘it is very important to rule out deep endometriosis, a pathology that is difficult to diagnose, serious, painful and in many cases incapacitating’, says the doctor.

According to the specialist Fernández-Villarenaga, ‘the control of endometriosis begins with a diagnosis, which to be confirmed must be supported by an adequate clinical interview with the patient, a gynecological examination and an ultrasound. Only in very selected cases, we would opt for obtaining a tissue sample, by surgery, for analysis. ‘

Once the diagnosis has been determined, according to the age of the patient, the symptoms and her desire for fertility, the most appropriate treatment is established for each case, sometimes requiring a multidisciplinary approach to the pathology.
