6 investigated for taking coquinas without a license and during the closed season

The Civil Guard has proceeded to six person investigation for an alleged crime related to the protection of flora and faunawhich are related to the exercise of shellfish at the foot of coquina. In the same way, a total of 40 administrative infractions to different regulations that order the capture of coquinas.

These actions carried out by the Civil Guard are carried out due to the pressure that poaching has been exerting on the Donax trunculus (coquina) species, which threatens its future, and more so during the closed season, which is when it reproduces.

The capture of the coquina is subject to a fishing resource management system, requiring an administrative license for its extraction.

the so-called Operation Donax1 It began in the month of May, when the Resolution issued by the General Directorate of Fisheries and Agriculture (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development of the Andalusian Government) was known, which determined the closed season for capture of the coquina in the Atlantic coast during 2022.

During that period, both Seprona de Huelva agents and the Fisheries Inspection of the Junta de Andalucía (Territorial Delegation in Huelva), intensified their actions on the Huelva coast, developing from the mouth of the Guadalquivir River to that of the Guadiana River, managing to intervene in said services a total of 125 kilograms of coquinas and several traces of shellfish.

After these interventions and before the new action procedure, the high recidivism in the illegal activity carried out by the investigated persons, can be considered as criminal conduct typified in the current penal code, art 335, “relevant shellfishing activities and that could cause serious damage to the resources of the area.

Those investigated, the proceedings and the reports of complaints filed have been made available to the competent Judicial and Administrative Authorities.

The intervened products were immediately returned alive to the sea (seeded).
